Women: Advertisement Slaves

From the begining of the humanity, women have been trying to be shown as weak, fragile, useless creatures. They’ve been trying to inure us that, they only exist for sex, and give birth to children. They’ve been trying to make us think that, their place is beneath the shadow of men. Take no offense but, this is all rubbish. Women are strong, women are physicially attractive but not as advertisement slaves.

Women are trying to be shown as weak, but believe me, they can be stronger than an ordinary man. I’m a 1.80 cm, 75 kg man but I remember that I was easily thrown by a 160 cm 50 kg woman. Literally, she threw me. It was not about the muscle power but there are some women who are even more muscular than men. They try to sell men products by portraying woman weak. ‘Advertising sector's manipulation of the images of women.’ and ‘Fragility, vulnerability, passivity and powerlessness identity of women in advertisements’ are the proves of the importance of male approval with regards to female advertisements…

In advertisements, they portray imaginary, god smackingly glorious, ‘ideal woman’ which is a product of the combination of montage, cosmetic and plastic surgery. They idolize a woman that actually doesn’t exist. The best parts of different women are assemblying on a body. People pay lots of money for being like that imaginary person. Jean Killbourne states that advertising isheterosexist, such as the portrayal of lesbians from porn and age-defying cosmetics, which result in high cosmetic surgery rates. Which is a proof that the system is completely based on selling things no matter what.

To sum up, I think that women should rebel against them who thinks and portrays them as second class people. They should indicate their worth, so that no one can even dare to use them as advertisement slaves ever again.

NOW OR PROBABLY NEVER

Turkey and Europe have been neighbors since 1071, which was when the first step that the Turkish people took via the Anatolia Malazgirt war to the European history stage occurred. They have, together, survived two era changes, two world wars, a renaissance, many reforms, the French revolution and so much. However, their relationship has not been cordial, since The Istanbul or Constantinople, invasion, the two sides have been in an endless conflict. Though they have been next to each other as nearly 1000 years, they still have not learned to compromise and live together.
If one scrutinizes Europe’s dramatic change since the invasion of Istanbul, one will mainly see some key points that have changed history. Europe in the 1000s was in the dark ages as the scholastic ideology of the church hung like a black cloud over Europe preventing it from the illumination it craved desperately; fortunately with the renaissance and reform movements, it was able to see the sun behind the clouds again. Free thinking, art and science nearly skyrocketed through Europe. Moreover, though European countries fought each other several times they were able to stand as a group, with the exception of WWI and WWII, thus the creation of a European Union was a logical step that verbalized the relationship amongst European countries.
On the other hand, although Turkey’s heydays have passed, a strong Turkey has been formed. Until WWI, Turkey, or the Ottoman Empire at that time, ruled Eastern Europe with Russia. It would even be justifiable to say that it was the super power in1500s in the world. However, after the resolution of the Ottoman Empire during WWI and the appearance of a great leader M. K. Ataturk, Turkey is much more different than the way it was and closer to Europe.
In my opinion, now is the right time for both sides to take their relationship, to the next level, as their fates inevitably have been knitted together. Neglecting Turkey’s demands to be a member of the EU, will cost the EU a powerful ally in the region. Both sides should accept their differences and try to live together peacefully. However, if the EU continues its attitude toward Turkey, an important turning point will be missed and their relationship will be severely harmed.
Politics are nowadays the strongest weapon a country could have, even more powerful than military ammunition. A strong Turkey, as it is now, will improve the EU’s political power especially over Muslim countries as they see the EU as a Christian Union that discriminates against Muslim countries and the Muslim world. And having Turkey as a member will inevitably increase the reputation of the EU in the world too, as Turkey is a strong ally of the USA and respected country especially by the newly formed Arab countries in the Middle East.
On the other hand, European countries are concerned because Turkey’s crowded population will become the second major party in the European parliament. However, being concerned about this fact is being concerned about democracy itself and why be afraid of democracy? Although it violates the democracy a change in the representative system of EU could solve the problem if the EU does not want Turkey to have many representatives, with amendments to the constitution every country could have an equal number of delegates in the parliament.
One of the stipulations of strong politics is a strong and stable economy. With the EU‘s unstable Euro region and aging population, its economics are in a line of collapse. Furthermore, its manufacturing power of goods is decreasing day by day. On the other hand, with its young generation and stable and growing economy, Turkey could be a cure to the ill economies of Europe. Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal are nearly going bankrupt. They need new markets to sell their goods or their citizens are looking for jobs: Turkey could be a the new market for these countries and for the rest of the EU as well.
Additionally, some European countries are afraid that an invasion will start when the free travel rights are given to the Turkish member citizens, young generations of Turks will flow into the borders of Europe and get all the jobs. It is undeniable to say that there will be no migration from Turkey to Europe but not all the Turkish people will come and inhabit Europe. The French had the same concerns about Poland, which was called the Plumber effect; however, statistics now show that there was no great migration from Poland to other European countries at extreme levels.
Though politics and economics play important roles, we have to consider the social aspect of the EU-Turkey relationship as well. EU with its dynamic, now seemed to be a Christian Union however, readily there are twelve million Muslim Europeans living in the borders of the EU. Some Europeans are afraid of its different life style and ideology, Turkey could have a negative impact on Europe’s culture, however, a different worldview from one’s own is not a daunting image rather a blessing that should be welcomed with appreciation.
None can deny that human rights conditions in Turkey do not meet the standards of Europe, however; we have to admit that there is constant improvement with new legislations. Rather than reprimanding Turks, we should see the full half of the glass and encourage them for their efforts.
Unfortunately, relationships of every member of EU and Turkey are not very friendly especially with Cyprus and Greece. Greece and Turkey have been fighting each other for nearly 1000 years so we could not expect them to solve their problems in a day. However with recent progress in the Cyprus situation, and exemplary manners of both governments in the 1999 earthquakes, in Istanbul first then in Athens, we could easily say that there is still hope. But increasing communication between two countries especially under the roof of the EU, we would take the biggest step to solution by starting negotiations again.
However, each side has ideals that they are not going to compromise; on the Turkish side this is Ataturk. If the EU keeps asking Turks to remove Ataturk’s portraits from government buildings, schools, hospitals for any reason, Turks will not compromise as M.K. Ataturk is literally the father of the modern Turkey and a great man to be inspired by. Unfortunately, though the EU could have good intentions, Turks are really concerned and the solution of this problem is for the EU parliament to understand what Ataturk symbolizes for the Turkish nation.
To sum up, Turkey has been waiting on the front doorstep of the EU for more than 50 years though it may seem a little time period over their history, Turkish people’s patience seems to have little left and the EU is in great need of a help maybe it is the best time to take their relationship to the next level or the EU is going to lose a precious ally.

Does Looking Good Really Pay Off?

Every second millions of cosmetic products are being sold and consumed by women who are known to be obsessed with their appereances but why? Women themselves? Men? The fear of being ignored? The media? In my opinion, it is the fault of every individual in society; Men are at fault for creating flawless imaginary women and making them sexual objects, the media and companies are at fault for using this image as a way to promote consuming, and finally women are at fault for accepting this fact and not speaking up but indeed, trying hard to satisfy the demands of men. As a result of all these factors, women are under pressure to look perfect. The fact that there is a defined concept of beauty is the reason women are so obsessed with their looks. The fear of being sidelined and rejected holds back women from speaking up. We, as women, feel obligated to look perfect, just like this image. Instead of rejecting it, women put a whole lot of effort into covering their flaws. It eventually crushes their confidence and turns them into bashful and withdrawn people. It is accepted that beauty plays a very important role in our social lives, carreers and in our self-esteems. The advantages a good looking person gains is a lot more than an ordinary person. A pretty face or a fit body would surely provide you with substantial priviledges and a strong self-esteem which is a must for success in life. For instance, among a group of candidates for a job the good looking person or the more confident person is more likely to be selected. In order to strike a balance, one should do what she can to have a decent look without crossing the line. When the line is crossed, then it becomes an obsession and obsession can blow a person apart. Beauty is a notion which is an important factor in relationships of most people. It is mostly defined by physical attractiveness. According to an article in Hispanic Magazine, a person looks 27% at the facial attractiveness and 20% at the bodily attractiveness of an opposite sex. Shapeliness of physique, overall grooming, clothing, less negative facial expressions and less obesity are the mostly accepted factors for attractiveness. Though the characteristics of a person are mostly in the second tier, the personality affects the overall beauty of one a lot. Characteristics which are found to be attractive are naivete, honesty, warmth and kindness. There is a common belief that beauty is found to be more important than intelligence which generally is supported by research. However, these two important factors are equally important to how one looks. The same article in Hispanic Magazine says that "It turns out that the brainy are not necessarily at a disadvantage to the beautiful. If one possesses intelligence and good looks, then all the better. " Beauty is not the only way to success, one has to find the balance between the importance of good look and personality. To sum up, neither the effect of physical appereance nor personality and intelligence should become an obsession. One should have confidence in herself and learn how to live with her flaws. So that she can focus on more important problems on her life or spend the time with her friends and family rather than complaining about her look. We shouldn't forget that one with the highest confidence always win, no matter how ugly or beautiful, how kind or mean how stupid or smart.

MEDIA VIOLENCE

Do you know that how the media and advertising affect the image of women in the society? Women are portrayed as sex objects to sell products and the beauty ideal stil tyrannize women.
First of all, according to “Killing us Softly” by Jean Kilbourne, this situation is called “violence” against women indirectly. The image of women should be powerful so the ads sell products and also they sell a view of sexuality. Kilbourne says that women’s worth depends on how they look. There is an idealized image and so many people are trying to seem like that. Here is the idealized image: thin, young, white-skinned and having breast implants… What is more, the issue is getting dangerous in society. For example, United States has the highest rates of teen pregnancy because use of sex to sell things is increasing. Also, some fundemental human traits such as compassion, cooperation and nurturance are devalued because of that media violence.
Secondly, according to “The Canadian Women’s Health Network” and “Public Health Agency of Canada”, women are trying to get thinner with unhealthy methods. When they see ads, they think that thinness is the key for beauty. They start tos kip meals and they do excessive exercises. Unfortunately, they can’t realize that beauty is unaltainable. On the other hand, women’s magazines say that if they lose weight, they will have a perfect marriage , children and a rewarding career. So they and their body parts sell everything from food to cars.
All in all, media organs such as advertisements and magazines cause a serious issue in the society. Women are used to sell products in a worthless way. They force themselves to have an ideal image. I think that putting men in ads would be a good solution for that issue.

IMPORTANCE OF WATER

Have you ever imagine that what happens if water resources disappear? Water is the essential part of all the world. Human beings, animals and plants need water to continue their life.
First of all, water is very important for nature and living beings which are found in ecosystem. For example, plants can’t make photosynthesis without water. That means they can’t produce organic substances for consumers. If fruits and vegetables can’t be produced, there would be a huge amount of hunger in the world. In dry climates, the soil is inefficient because of inadequate amount of water. What is more, water has an important role for animals, too. It provides a habitat for most of animals such as fishes, crocodiles, frogs and some kind of birds. They are fed in the seas and also they reproduce in the water, too.
Secondly, water has a fundamental function for human beings. Third fourth of our body is made up of water. Most of enzymes or systems don’t work if there’s no water. Also drinking water is very important for people. They should drink at least eight glasses of water per day. By doing this, human beings don’t lose water by sweating. What else, if a person drinks enough water, his skin doesn’t dry up and it will have a healthy look. By the way, if a person is on a diet, drinking water will be beneficial because it helps burning lipids quickly. It helps digesting and a person lose weight easily.
All in all, water is the indispensable matter for all the living beings in the world. It is impossible that there is a life without water so we should be careful about usage of water.

Women In Advertisements

Loveliness, belle, fairness and prettiness… All of these words mean beauty but how is this word used nowadays? Before explaining what real beauty is, let us see what it means. Literally, beauty is a characteristic of anything that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure or satisfaction.[1] I think that there are two important points to decide someone’s beauty; the first is physical appearance and the other is character traits or inner beauty. Unfortunately, no society has understood how to evaluate people as being beautiful or ugly. More and more people consider only physical appearance but never moral values when judging beauty especially because of advertisements that turn women’s bodies into objects. Advertisements change our perception of what female beauty is so we need to be aware of how the images that they show us are different from the truth.

“Our idea of what beauty is may not be what we think it is because of advertisements. and society.” nts Being sexy is not something about your personality but just about looking attractive and getting the attention of the opposite gender. Without a doubt, all women can become sexy by using cosmetic products, going under plastic surgery or by choosing catchy clothes. Actually, this is what advertisers try to emphasize. In order to reach their primary goal of selling the product, they take the advantage of the soft spots of women.[2] The advertisers convince female consumers to believe that they will look more attractive in the case of using their miraculous product. Nevertheless, the truth is that at the end of some operations on your skin, you may have a nice but artificial physical appearance but it is not something to be proud of since everyone who has a big enough budget can have one, too. In the advertisements, we all see models having no lines, wrinkles or scars. How is this level of beauty possible? Actually, it is not, this beauty is computer generated. The majority of advertisements promote that looking good is a vital key for having strong social interaction ability. For example: “He said the first thing he noticed was your great personality. He lied.”[3] says an advertisement targeted at young girls.

Beauty does matter but not in the way that we are told it does and it is achievable by anybody no matter their looks.
However, after a while he tries to learn what is in her mind and her heart. If she is just a hollow girl, he will have nothing to do with her. Here, importance of being beautiful steps in. Being beautiful is not just looking good but also having a good spirit. When a woman just takes care of herself instead of being trapped by furtive advertisements, she no longer has to try to do more. All of society should comprehend that being beautiful has two steps. You can achieve the easier one by having little retouches. The second and the harder step is not something you can acquire with money. She should be holding nice moral values inside herself such as being purified from envy, hate, hypocrisy and so on. At the time she is like that, she is the most beautiful woman in the world.

Furthermore, there is unjust use of women in most of the advertisements. Sincerely, are women disturbed by being used as objects or not? As a man, honestly, I feel the pricks of my conscience when I think of the situation because these advertisements cause sexism. Even if many kinds of advertisements do not obviously declare men as being stronger and more powerful than women, they impose the same idea by the images used to promote the product. Advertisers give women the role of satisfying someone else’s pleasure. They ask rhetoric questions such as “Are you having a problem with fitting into nice jeans?” or “Is your husband complaining about your cup size?” But women are different than men.
Besides, men are shown as active and tough. If a man is using a woman as a footrest or a woman is photographed when her lips are covered to prevent her from speaking out, there must be something wrong. I cannot understand how women do not argue and stand against the advertisers’ approach. Women must not be shown as vulnerable, easy to control or suppressible by men because this causes problems such as…

To sum up, advertisements deliberately lead to the formation of a chasm between men and women owing to their profit that they will gain. Women must learn that being beautiful is not something that is what is shown on billboards, in leaflets, on TVs or heard on radios. Beauty is certainly acquired by the purity of the heart and then immaterially by the beauty of the skin. Your skin will get older and older, one day no product will help you to hide the marks of old age. Would a sincere and warm hearted husband leave you because of the lines on your forehead? Let me tell you, of course not. He will love you for a lifetime being attach to your heart, your character and you if you are pure, without any plastic surgery. Moreover, advertisers’ attitudes towards females must be changed by the protest of both women and men. You, the “beautiful” lady, you are a personage for the society and please be aware of your importance.

Idealizing Beauty On Ads

Are you aware how women are portrayed as sex objects in media, especially by advertising?
Producers know how to use subliminal advertising. People are forced to buy products by brain washing,
by using beautiful women.
To start with, Jean Killbourne who is a feminist author, speaker said that ''Ads primalary sell
products but also sell a view of sexuality and normalcy.'' What she said is the main point of the topic; it means
they tell us who we are and who we should be. Now a days, women exist in a world where their bodies are
constantly judged and their worth depend on how they look. Ads give us the idea of perfection. They have a
huge effection on us as consumers. We see approximately three thousand ads per a day and we get the
message of being women that is idealized. Even we do not accept the effects, it is true that advertising has an
impact on every society.
What is more, admen create perfect temperament which make us envy them. Computer graphics
can now generate aperfect real woman. They define excellence as having long legs, being young and thin and
usually white. Also, silicing which means portraying women mainly as passive and vulnerable, is an other way
to take attention. On ads, womens' body language are passive and their colour is silent; it gives the idea of
being both innocent and sexy. For example, models are mostly long legged, small brested and narrow waist.
This how women should be; beautiful but unprotected...
In addition, when we see the ads, our point of view to beauty is changed. We think we should
be like the models to have succes, perfect marriage, great sex and lovely children, so we start to imitate
models. Five percent of women in the world have thee body shape that is idealized and the others suffer with
feeling deficient. For example, in one of the ads, it is said that '' Does your husband wish you had larger
breast? '' When a woman see that she decide to change her physical appearance by plastic surgery despite
chancing her husband.
To sum up, what women forget is that photographs are airwashed or otherwise altered to
remove any lines, bumps or lumps anything less then perfection. If the ideal beauty phssically unattainable,
then consumers will never be able to attain the immage that they want and therefore there will be endless
demand for new products, it is excatly what adment want.

BEAUTY AND WOMEN IN ADVERTISMENTS

‘Beauty is the bait with which delight allures man to enlarge his kind.’ said Socrates. The secret of beauty and attractiveness has been a quest of humans for as long as we have been civilized. According to research, many women spend up to one-third of their income on looking good. For years, women have been seen as a symbol of beauty and men as a symbol of power. In the film Killing Us Softly 3 by Jean Kilbourne, it is made clear that women are symbolized as sex objects in advertisements. Kilbourne shows through pictures from advertisements that women arealmost always shown as the weakest and men as the strongest. For Kilbourne, men are not living in a world where they are raped or beaten as woman are. Through advertisements we can see that masculinity is often linked with violence and the females are often devalued in society. Also, people often compare themselves with others in their daily lives. Even when watching tv commercials, there is a tendency to make comparisons with the models that they see. It is true that when we see a beautiful woman or a handsome man, we can’t succeed in not making comparisons. This is a law of nature that the beautiful or the handsome ones are being envied all the time.
Physical attractiveness is a very sensitive issue for many women. Even in advertising, the use of highly attractive models is believed to be effective in increasing sales. Why else would we advertisers spend so much to show us beautiful models all of the time? Most women are trying to be as the women they see in the billboards or on television. Girls start to behave like models from the beginning of adolescence. They are putting on make-up, they are trying to be thin so as a result they are losing their natural beauty. In the Sunday Telegraph, Matthew McDonald said ’In the end, every woman has to follow her own inner beauty gun.’ It is a big question mark whether we fall in love with a natural beauty or an imitation of someone else. What I think is that the one we love must be the one that we are linked to by thoughts. Research from Arizona University revealed that the one we love is someone that we find ourselves in, the inner beauty or the acceptance in thoughts is more important than the outer beauty. Instead of trying to be someone like a supermodel we should be different and we should prove the soul inside us because each of us has our own natural beauty.
However, woman still have the role of the weakest in the televison or in commercials. Women are the ones that are being maltreated. In society, they often face with violence and injustice. This occasion can also be seen in the advertisments; in the Killing Us Softly 3, it is said that even in the commercials of important brands like Calvin Klein, we can easily see the difference between a passive girl and an active boy. What I think is, this should be the opposite. It is known that woman are thought of as weak in society, but actually it is not like that; woman are strong, powerful and brave enough to do everything they want but they are the symbols of weakness in the contrast to man. In advertisements, by showing women as powerful can change those absurd thoughts in a society. In the Dailymail Magazine by Lowri Turner it is said that the only difference between men and women is that the man has larger bones in the constrast to women. So it is ridiculous to say that men are the most powerful.
All in all, those efforts to be like a Victoria’s Secret Angel are nothing more than a dream because those angels have the natural beauty which we all have, but didn’t come out to the appearance. I think that advertisements are big role models for young people but to tell the truth, they are not setting a good example. So there should be a change which must be profound and global. We should not change the ads but also these attitudes that run so deep in our culture. Without the pressures of being physically beautiful, men and women, boys and girls have an ability to have authentic freely chosen lives and nothing less.
