  1. Both Kevin McCoy and Brian Rafferty are Catholics. But they don't share same feelings toward the conflict between the two sects...
Brian thinks that all "Mick" should fight against the Protestants to win their freedom of belief and life. So Brian promotes young Catholic boys to start fights against the soldiers, he doesn't like Protestants and thinks they're the guilty ones for occupying Ireland. On the other hand, he forces Kevin to join their fight for a free Ireland. However Kevin doesn't want to join their Catholic group, he remembers Brede was badly injured in one of those fights. So Kevin is approaching the issue more logically and doesn't want to cause any trouble. From these reasons of course, some arguments occur between two juvenescents. For example; in these chapters Brian wants Kevin to hide a rifle in the scrapyard but Kevin refuses his suggestion and a fight starts between them...

  2. Chapters 5-7-8
When Kevin comes home Brede asks him where he’s been. He tells the truth but Brede doesn’t like it. In the morning when he’s walking to Mr. Kelly's for work he sees Brian. Brian says he has to talk with him. When Kevin comes home after work Brian is waiting for him. After dinner Kevin follows him to Brian's house. Brian shows Kevin a box of ammunition and Kevin is shocked. Brain asks him to join his group. Kevin won’t and he leaves the house.
Sadie and Kevin went to Bangor. They had a picnic and after that they went to a café. Then they go to the beach and talk about their lives. At first it was just a normal conversation, but after a while it became an argument. Kevin leaves her and Sadie stays on the beach until it starts to rain. Kevin came back for her and they ran to a shelter. They kiss for the first time. It was getting late and they hurried to the bus, but they were too late and the last bus had already left. So they tried to get a lift and they get one from Uncle Albert.
Uncle Albert gives them a lift but the car breaks down, so they had to walk. When they approached Belfast they passed some soldiers. They let them through and they also hear from them that a military car has been blown up. As when they walk on they pass a burning shop. Uncle Albert leaves them when Kevin brings Sadie home. Then they see three people coming up the street.

  4. Kevin and Brede have a conflict at the beginning of Chapter 6. Kevin’s family worries about Kevin when he comes home late. Kevin tells Brede that he is with Sadie and he is going to meet her again. When Sadie hears that, she tries to convince his brother not to meet Sadie again as she knows that this relationship is so dangerous and may cause trouble. As a matter of fact, their religion is the biggest obstacle between the McCoys and the Jacksons. At the same time Brede would like to see Tommy, too but she believes that she shouldn’t.
