  1. The Silent Couple
There was once a very stubborn young man and an equally young woman who met, fell
in love, got married. After the wedding ceremony, they had a grand feast at their new
house. The celebration lasted all day.
When all the guests had left, the husband
noticed that the guests had failed to close the
    door.
"My dear," he said, "would you mind getting up
    and shutting the door?"
"Why dhould you I shut it?" yawned the wife.
"I've been on my feet all day. You should shut it."
"So that's the way it's going to be!" snapped
the husband. "Just as soon as you get your ring
on your finger, you turned into a lazy good-fornothing!"
"How dare are you!" shouted the bride. "We
haven't ever been married a day, and already
you're calling me names and ordering me
    around!"
They sat glaring at each other for a full five
minutes. Than an idea popped into the bride's
    head.
"My dear," she said, "neither of us want tp
shut the door, and both of usvare tired of hearing
the other's voice. So I purpose a contest. The one
who speaks first must get up and close the door."
"It's the best idea I've ever heard all day," replied her husband.
So they had been that way for about two hours when one of the bride's friend came to visit
them. When he tried to knock the door, he realised that the door is already opened. He
wondered why the door was open so he asked "Hi! Why did you left the door open?", but
he could't get any answer from neither of them. First he thought it was a joke for him but
waiting a couple of minutes for an answer he could't wait anymore and started to poke the
    bride.
After a while, husband could't stand to see that somebody is poking his wife, he finally
said the first word and said "Hey? What re you trying to do? You can't touch my husband
    without my permission!
"Yeah!" said the bride. "Not you'll stand up and close that door!"

  2. Live And Work
Father was a hardworking man who delivered bread as a living to support his wife and three children. He spent all his evenings after work attending classes, hoping to improve himself so that he could one day find a better paying job. Except for Sundays, Father hardly ate a meal together with his family. He worked and studied very hard because he wanted to provide his family with the best money could buy.

Whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

The day came when the examination results were announced. To his joy, Father passed, and with distinctions too! Soon after, he was offered a good job as a senior supervisor which paid handsomely.

Like a dream come true, Father could now afford to provide his family with life’s little luxuries like nice clothing, fine food and vacation abroad.

However, the family still did not get to see father for most of the week. He continued to work very hard, hoping to be promoted to the position of manager. In fact, to make himself a worthily candidate for the promotion, he enrolled for another course in the open university.

Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

Father’s hard work paid off and he was promoted. Jubilantly, he decided to hire a maid to relieve his wife from her domestic tasks. He also felt that their three-room flat was no longer big enough, it would be nice for his family to be able to enjoy the facilities and comfort of a condominium. Having experienced the rewards of his hard work many times before, Father resolved to further his studies and work at being promoted again. The family still did not get to see much of him. In fact, sometimes Father had to work on Sundays entertaining clients. Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

As expected, Father’s hard work paid off again and he bought a beautiful condominium overlooking the coast of Singapore. On the first Sunday evening at their new home, Father declared to his family that he decided not to take anymore courses or pursue any more promotions. From then on he was going to devote more time to his family.

Father did not wake up the next day.

  3. A Gift Of Love
"Can I see my baby?” the happy new mother asked.

When the bundle was nestled in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped. The doctor turned quickly and looked out the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.

Time proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect. It was only his appearance that was marred. When he rushed home from school one day and flung himself into his mother’s arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be a succession of heartbreaks. He blurted out the tragedy. “A boy, a big boy … called me a freak.”

He grew up, handsome for his misfortune. A favorite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for that. He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music. “But you might mingle with other young people,” his mother reproved him, but felt a kindness in her heart. The boy’s father had a session with the family physician. Could nothing be done? “I believe I could graft on a pair of outer ears, if they could be procured,” the doctor decided.

Whereupon the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice for a young man. Two years went by. Then, “You are going to the hospital, Son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it’s a secret,” said the father. The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person emerged. His talents blossomed into genius, and school and college became a series of triumphs.

Later he married and entered the diplomatic service. “But I must know!” He urged his father, “Who gave so much for me? I could never do enough for him.” “I do not believe you could,” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know … not yet.” The years kept their profound secret, but the day did come … one of the darkest days that a son must endure. He stood with his father over his mother’s casket. Slowly, tenderly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish-brown hair to reveal that the mother had no outer ears. “Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut,” he whispered gently, “and nobody ever thought Mother less beautiful, did they?”

Real beauty lies not in the physical appearance, but in the heart. Real treasure lies not in what that can be seen, but what that cannot be seen. Real love lies not in what is done and known, but in what that is done but not known.
